Who and Why | Print |

So enough is enough. We’ve decided that neither of us is really suited to the 9-5. There must be more to life, more to see. And not in a ‘work really hard, go on holiday for two weeks a year’ kind of seeing. There has to be another way. It’s funny but when you tell people that you’re not actually going away for a “gap year”, that you don’t have a date for your return and in fact you might not actually return. Then people often think you’re insane.

A smart man once said, ‘that life is about collecting memories.’ At some point in the future we all get to a stage where we have more past than future. And at that stage we begin to daydream more of the things we have done. So what if you have never done anything, been nowhere, experienced nothing?

So, our aim is to make sure we have something to daydream about; in those cold days in the nursing home, when the air is full of urine and the nurses play ‘swap around the pills’ just to see what fun they can have with the inmates. We want to be able to sit back - bad joints allowing - and dream of the things we have seen.

Our trip will include the following places:

Start – Northern Thailand – Philippines – Borneo – Indonesia (Sumatra, Java, Komodo Island) – Malasyia – Southern Thailand - Cambodia - Vietnam - Somewhere thrown into all of that we're hoping to get to East Timor and Papau New Gineau then after that, not sure yet…

Alex is a massive fan of dinosaurs so the general aim is to work our way to Komodo Island, to see the dragons and then after that we are not sure.

We start by doing a six week language course in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and after that we are thinking about doing some volunteering – then who knows…
