It has actually been over a week since we went to visit Komodo. The memory now is a bit sketchy. We would have written a diary entry sooner, but we had very little internet access and the bit we had wouldn’t let us upload anything.
The internet café in Flores is on the top floor, above a supermarket. There are lots of windows and no aircon. The place must have been getting on for 90 degrees – crazy.
Still, we’re away from Flores now, I want to shout yay – but that would be a little harsh, as the diving was great – got to see a 5m Manta Ray, and Octopus and an amazing, alien-esk looking Cuttlefish.
Komodo was really cool. In the end we had to charter a boat – there are day trips, even overnight trips, but we wanted to spend two nights on the island so that we could go on one of the longer treks. This meant getting our own boat, which was great because it allowed us to set our own itinerary.
Plus, staying on the island meant that the guides that were supposed to escort us everywhere soon got bored (after ten minutes), and left us to wonder around. Which was cool, but scary! There were at least five, three metre dragons hanging around the ranger’s station at any one time, plus wild boar and a group of deer – not that deer are scary, though I did hear that when Bambi grew up he went on a killing spree to avenge his mother.
Below are some short videos that we took on our trip, like I said the memory is a bit sketchy so these save me having to think too hard – well it is baking hot here!
I know there are a fair view videos, some are funny though, some dull (unless you like nice views and hearing me out of breath) and the last three have some nice shots of the Dragons, including one just after they fed them – even though they say they don’t and haven’t for 10 years. You only have to see how fat and lazy looking the lizards are to see they still do, and it was only a matter of time before we saw them dropping chicken down to them – nice to see them feeding though; real top of the food chain stuff :)
